MAYA TRADITIONS GROUP
lake atitlán, guatemala
Tucked between three volcanoes, Lake Atitlán’s shore is dotted with twelve small towns. Artisans in this area practice the art of backstrap weaving, a Mayan tradition that has been perfected for thousands of years, passed from generation to generation. The symbols and designs used in backstrap weaving share the unique histories and cultures of each community. Made up of eight co-operative groups from various towns, Maya Traditions seeks to improve the quality of life of skilled Mayan artisans through market access while preserving their culture and strengthening their communities.
We love that Maya Traditions values the preservation of Mayan culture through traditional arts, knowledge and health care. We invest 10% of our profits directly into their programs for Artisan Education in literacy, design and small business training, Youth Education Scholarships for the member’s children and Community Health Care through traditional Mayan medicine.
